Your Opportunity

The ICU RN is a leader and pivotal member of the interprofessional team who acts as a primary caregiver to the patient and family in a critical care setting. This role requires advanced critical care certifications, including cardiac arrest management and rapid assessment. ICU Nurses work collaboratively with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists, and social workers to achieve the best patient outcomes through a team-based approach.

The ICU participates in a provincial critical care orientation program that provides tailored education to meet specific learning requirements. This 20-bed unit manages a broad case mix, including critically ill medical, surgical, cardiac, pediatric, and trauma patients.

Key responsibilities include:

• Provision of direct care for patients and families
• Maintenance of electronic and written documentation of care
• Mentoring of unit staff and ongoing professional development
• Assuming charge nurse duties when needed
• Promotion of a positive supportive work environment
• Demonstration of professional accountability

Description

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities, and populations, while ensuring their safety and well-being. Your role will involve using nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making, as well as teaching, counseling, and advocating for patients and their families.

You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion, and maintenance. Safe, quality, patient- and family-centered care will be expected, reflecting our shared vision and values.

Compensation

• Provisional Permit Holders salary: $39.58 /hour – $54.16/hour
• Upon being registered, the salary will adjust to the applicable rate for a Registered Nurse.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited nursing education program
• Active or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP)

If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse in the last five years, you are required to complete the following free courses:

• CRNA Medication Management – Chapters 1 – 4
• NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification

Additional Required Qualifications

• Two years of recent acute medical/surgical experience or current ICU/CCU experience
• Current certification for IV therapy
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills
• Possesses critical thinking and advanced assessment skills
• Self-motivated and enthusiastic learner
• Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively within the inter-professional team
• Maintenance of clinical competence and proficiency
• Accountability for professional practice

Preferred Qualifications

• Current ACLS certification
• Current education/training in hemodynamic monitoring
• Awareness of Alberta Health Services Shared Commitments
• ACCN certification and/or Orientation Program for Adult Critical Care in Alberta (OPACCA)
• CRRT certification
• Charge nurse experience
• Connect Care/EPIC experience
• ICU/CCU experience
