From International Student to PR: My Journey to Canada

This First Person column is written by Keerthy Vinukonda, who lives in Toronto. For more information about First Person stories, see the FAQ.

After a long shift at a pizza shop, I found myself at a bus stop in the freezing cold, reflecting on my journey as an international student in Canada. I had earned a pharmacy degree back in India, but my dream of becoming a pharmacist here required me to pass equivalency exams, which posed a significant challenge.

I arrived in Toronto in 2016 on a study permit, hoping to get better opportunities amidst rising unemployment in India. With hard work, I completed a health-care administration program and another certificate, which helped me secure a work permit.

Finding Your Path in Canada

Getting a job as a shift supervisor in restaurants was far from my intended career, but it counted as Canadian skilled work experience, qualifying me for the Express Entry immigration stream. This process allows skilled workers to apply for permanent residency (PR) based on their work experience and skills. In 2021, I received an invitation to apply for PR, and three years later, I became a Canadian citizen.

When my twin sister expressed her desire to move here, I wanted to paint a realistic picture. Many in India idealize life in Canada, unaware of the hurdles one might face. I hoped she wouldn’t overlook the physical and emotional challenges that can accompany the pursuit of a dream.

Navigating Challenges

Sure, my path wasn’t easy. Even though I graduated with honours in India, passing the pharmacy equivalency exams proved difficult. Instead of pursuing my intended career, I worked long hours in a restaurant, commuting a hefty twenty hours a week.

The sacrifices didn’t deter my spirit. Despite the long journey, I now cherish my Canadian citizenship. It fills me with pride to participate in elections and sing O Canada at my citizenship ceremony—experiences that cement my bond with this beautiful country.
