Canada’s New Work Permit Rule for Job Change in Express Entry

Canada has introduced a new option allowing foreign workers to change jobs without waiting for work permit approvals. This is great news for anyone looking to work in Canada!

Typically, if you want to work in Canada, you need a work permit. This document is essential for legally being employed and receiving payment.

The government is now making it easier for foreign workers to switch jobs, helping them grow their careers and enhance their financial stability.

However, individuals eligible to work without a permit still require a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada.

Who Can Work Without Approval?

Foreign nationals in Canada with a valid work permit who apply for a new one before their current permit expires can work under “maintained status.” This allows them to continue working while awaiting approval for their new application.

If you have a valid study permit, you can also work off-campus and during academic breaks without a separate work permit.

With the new policy, if you have a job offer and have submitted a work permit application, you can start working right away.

Impact of the ‘Non-Accompanying’ Spouse Option

For married applicants, Canada allows them to declare their spouse as ‘non-accompanying’ when applying for permanent residency. This can influence their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which assesses factors like age and qualifications.

While it may seem beneficial to declare a spouse as non-accompanying to gain additional points, this can lead to issues if the IRCC discovers inconsistencies in an applicant’s claims.

Honesty is key, as misrepresentation could lead to serious consequences, including bans on reapplying for residency.
