Canada: Eligible Study Fields for PG Work Permit Visa
As of June 25, 2025, Canada is updating its list of eligible fields of study for Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP). These changes aim to align with job markets experiencing long-term shortages and reflect the evolving needs of various sectors.
What’s New in the PGWP Guidelines?
The newly revamped list introduces a total of 920 eligible fields of study, which includes some notable updates:
- 119 new fields have been added in vital areas such as healthcare, education, social services, and selected trades.
- On the flip side, 178 fields were removed because they no longer correspond with occupations in long-term shortages.
This update is designed to support the Canadian economy, particularly as part of the 2025 Express Entry changes that prioritise addressing labour shortages in key sectors.
Eligibility Criteria for PGWP
If you submitted your study permit application prior to the June 25 update, don’t worry! You’ll still qualify for a PGWP if your program was on the approved list when you applied, even if it’s been removed since then.
New Rules for International Students
In addition to these updates, there are significant changes for international students starting in 2024. The International Student Program will require students enrolled in non-degree programs to study in fields linked to jobs in long-term shortages. This rule applies to anyone who applies for a study permit on or after November 1, 2024.
