About Us

Our client is an independent not-for-profit research institute focusing on applied research. The position is based in Hinton, Alberta, a beautiful community located 20 minutes east of Jasper National Park and 3 hours west of Edmonton. Hinton, surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Alberta Rockies, offers plenty of recreational activities, including mountain biking, climbing, hiking, and skiing, along with various arts and cultural opportunities.

Job Description

The successful candidate will join a team focused on conducting hydrology research in Alberta, primarily managing four large grants coordinated with partners. These projects include:

• Modelling Applications for Forest Management: The aim is to develop a scientific and user-friendly web-hosted hydrological modelling application for foresters, forestry consultants, and government planners to better understand the cumulative effects of forest development and climate change on hydrological indicators.
• Assessment of Stream Crossings’ Effects on Water Temperature: This study involves monitoring to quantify how stream crossings affect thermal regimes, aiming for a comprehensive understanding of their primary drivers and effects.
• Impact of Forest Management Practices and Wildfires on Water Quality: This program aims to study the effects of severe wildfires, flooding, and different forest harvesting strategies on water quality and habitats.
• High Density LiDAR Stream Layer Development: The project focuses on creating advanced stream networks using high density LiDAR, enhancing predictions regarding stream location and features crucial for foresters and fisheries managers.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage budgets and submit reports for grants.
• Organize workshops and engagement sessions with stakeholders, partners, academics, and indigenous communities.
• Facilitate information sharing through various media.
• Serve as the main contact between our client and project leads for updates.
• Assist in fieldwork related to hydrology projects.
• Plan and coordinate fieldwork activities.
• Support funding applications for the Water and Fish Program.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

• A minimum of a BSc in a related discipline with at least 4 years of relevant experience, or an MSc with 2 years of experience.
• Publication experience (thesis or lead author).
• Strong public speaking and organizational skills.
• Experience with ArcGIS and hydrological datasets.
• Ability to meet strict deadlines and solve problems independently.
• Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence with 3 years of driving experience.
• Grant management and literature familiarity.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

• 1 year of field experience in remote locations.
• Experience working in areas with active forestry, oil and gas, or mining activities.
• Grant writing experience.

Employment Details

Salary: $62,000 – $85,000
Hours: 37.5 hrs/week
Duration: 2-year term (possible extension based on performance and funding)
Location: Hinton, Alberta
